Generally we make two different kinds of love t-shirts at 52tease, those that are interested in the power of love to heal all wounds and those that help you meet that someone special (pick-up shirts).

Although our design team has been pumping out shirts for our new PG13+ line of clothing over the past few weeks, they actually decided to create something for those long-term lovers of love (and not the guy or gal looking for the one-night lovefest). Well, to be totally honest, we kind of had to lean on the design folks pretty hard to put out a design that is not geared to the average (and by that, we mean below average, of course) college student.

I'm pretty sure that the design crew was trying to get the upper management upset when they proposed our newest design, an anatomically correct heart placed anatomically incorrectly over one's left breast (instead of closer to the center of the chest).

The big kids, though, weren't going to fall for their bating tactics...and actually thought the anatomically correct heart, showing the correct flow of blood into the vena cava (both superior and inferior), and none leaving the ventricles for the body, was a pretty cute design that needed to see the light of day. Instead of labeling the intake arrows "blood" the idea people wittily inserted script writing with the word "you".

The insinuation is, of course, that you fill up my heart and, once you enter, you never leave. Of course, our scientificologists don't expect everyone to get that right off the bat, so they were sure to include the post-text (on the bottom): "You enter my heart and never leave" as their little touch.

These t-shirts and other items are sure to be an awesome gift for that special someone in your life. Imagine their joy and awe when they see their very own anatomically correct heart printed over the breast of their new t-shirt.

From a marketing standpoint, we'd really like it if you got a matching set for yourself and your sweety. That way you can be the cutest couple on your block (by far).

Speaking of which, why don't more couples wear matching clothes? Not only would it make it clear to that ogling onlooker in the bar that you're an exclusive item, it could also make it easier for you to find each other in a department store (well, matching clothes and two cell phones with a family plan or "walky talky" function ought to do the trick).

Maybe in our next business venture we will deal exclusively with matching clothes for couples and families (Chas Tenenbaum -Ben Stiller) had the right idea in The Royal Tennenbaums)...but I wouldn't go holding your breath or anything.

What do You do With Emptiness?

This week, as you can tell by glancing over the pictures in this blog entry, we're offering you several options riffing off the idea of emptiness. The first explores the religions aspect of emptiness, the second looks at the graphic nature and primal responses and the third deals with President Bush's head (although, to be fair, the third design is not on sale this week as we created it to satisfy a custom-request).

To be completely honest, even the first design, fill the emptiness, was a custom request, but one we wanted to share with the world at large at a discounted price. If you're having trouble seeing the first image, it includes a fire-tinged stained-glass window of a repentant or prayerful person with another's hands on his shoulders. The entire image, as well as the text, Fill the emptiness, has a "ripped" or distressed quality to it.

This is another one of those shirt designs wherein the wearer and the viewer may have a completely different interpretation of the meaning. Is this t-shirt arguing that religion is necessary to fill the void or only that it is a useless opiate for the masses...one that ultimately destroys our identity and sense of self?

Don't ask us...we just envision, design and make these things.

After working on the fill the emptiness design for a client, our design crew started toying around with some of the elements/concepts and came up with the more abstract and highly colorful design you see to your right.

What if, instead of trying to fill the emptiness, one instead wanted to experience it...to FEEL the emptiness? Although it is difficult to see the detail applied to the shirts, you can rest assured that any products you purchase with this design will include the fine detail and vivid colors you see to the right. Of course, the only part of the image that is in grayscale (or greyscale as they write it in "Jolly Old England") is the text, creating a visual 'emptiness' for the viewer.

Boy, all this talk about emptiness has got us thinking about what's between the ears of the current President of the United States of America, one George W. Bush (yes, our favorite political target--come on, you'd have to be blind, bound up, missing most of your limbs and slowly drowning in quicksand to miss a shot at that administration).

Although we won't argue that he has absolutely nothing between his ears, a lot of parents have already proudly declared that their children are "already smarter than Bush."

We have sold countless already smarter than Bush onesies, toddler t-shirts and youth t-shirts. That was why we realized that this would be the perfect design to debut our newest product, maternity t-shirts!

What better way to point out the idiocy of the current president and your disdain for the way things are going in America than to slap this slogan across your big, pregnant belly? Seriously, pick up an already smarter than Bush maternity shirt for your fetus and you'll be the envy of expecting mothers everywhere.

We are currently able to print maternity shirts in the normal fashion and on the bellies, as you can see on these two products. Although we aren't the type of t-shirt shop that would focus solely on this segment of our clientèle, we are always happy to offer more clothing choices for more body types.

Let the Love Continue

Wow, we could not have picked a better time to try to spread some love and goodness into the world. There are college students dying as we speak, a national uproar over racial relations thanks to the on air antics of Don Imus, Indians (not to be confused with Native Americans) burning effigies of Richard Gere, Muqtada al-Sadr has quit the Iraqi government, a magnet school in NYC is causing controversy just because it focuses on Arabic issues and even the sea lions are turning against us.

Things are certainly falling to pieces fast and we at 52tease.com think that's because we've learned to embrace hate at the expense of love. You know this isn't new ground for us. We've been talking about celebrating love for a while...but the current trend of racial and cultural acrimony has to stop.

We hope that our Let the Love Continue icon, of interlocking hands colored the spectrum of a rainbow, will help serve as a reminder of those bastions of nineteen sixties hippie culture: peace, love and understanding.

As you can see by the design on the right, we've gotten back to some good old-fashioned male-chauvinistic roots with our other accompanying text, "Let the brotherly love continue." Although we considered a "Let the simblingly love continue" design, we just couldn't figure out how people could vocalize such a tongue-twisty word.

These logos speak not just to racial and cultural harmony, but to the concepts of love and peace. We're especially fond of this design because it reminds us of our youth when we joined hands with our fellow man (and woman) for Hands Across America.

We're not going to recommend another nation-wide event like that, as the world is a different place. We're now living in the era of the long tail where the Internet and widespread communication devices allow small niche groups of people to find each other across the globe and form larger, established groups. As a culture we have moved from a micro, to macro and back to micro scale.

One example of this type of interaction is the new badge you may have noticed in our side bar over the last few weeks. This Kiva badge allows you to join with others in helping the smallest of business people get a very small loan to, hopefully, drag themselves out of poverty.

Laborer=Hands Craftsman=Head Artist=Heart

Stop us if you've heard this one before. A laborer works with her hands, a craftsman works with his hands and his head and an artist works with her hands, head and heart. Okay, so it's not a joke, but it is an account of the differences between an artist and just about anyone else around him.

**Notice how we have to keep changing up the gender in the above sentences? English needs a gender-neutral pronoun NOW (that is not a reference to the National Organization for Women)!

Apparently there used to be not one but two gender-neutral pronouns in English according to Wikipedia:

Historically, there were two gender neutral pronouns native to English dialects, 'ou' and 'a', but they have long since died out. According to Dennis Baron's Grammar and Gender:

In 1789, William H. Marshall records the existence of a dialectal English epicene pronoun, singular "ou": "'Ou will' expresses either he will, she will, or it will." Marshall traces "ou" to Middle English epicene "a", used by the 14th century English writer John of Trevisa, and both the OED and Wright's English Dialect Dictionary confirm the use of "a" for he, she, it, they, and even I. This "a" is a reduced form of the Anglo-Saxon he = "he" and heo = "she". By the 12th and 13th centuries, these had often weakened to a point where, according to the OED, they were "almost or wholly indistinguishable in pronunciation." The modern feminine pronoun she, which first appears in the mid twelfth century, seems to have been drafted at least partly to reduce the increasing ambiguity of the pronoun system.... ^[3]

Baron goes on to describe how relics of these sex-neutral terms survive in some British dialects of Modern English, and sometimes a pronoun of one gender might be applied to a person or animal of the opposite gender.

Although we'd like to start our own gender-free pronoun movement, it apparently wouldn't be the first attempt and is probably doomed to equal failure:

Some groups and individuals have used non-standard pronouns, hoping they will become the standards. Various proposals for such changes have been around since at least the 19th century. The American Heritage Book of English Usage says of these efforts:

Like most efforts at language reform, these well-intended suggestions have been largely ignored by the general English-speaking public, and the project to supplement the English pronoun system has proved to be an ongoing exercise in futility. Pronouns are one of the most basic components of a language, and most speakers appear to have little interest in adopting invented ones. This may be because in most situations people can get by using the plural pronoun they or using other constructions that combine existing pronouns, such as he/she or he or she.^[4]

Here are the third person singular personal pronouns in English: 'he', 'she', 'it', and singular 'they'. Below them are examples of the better known neologisms.

The gender-neutral pronoun "co" is used in contemporary everyday language by the 100 people who live at Twin Oaks Community in Virginia, USA. It is used to mean "s/he" in the case in which the gender is not known or is irrelevant.**

Of course, this whole discussion is irrelevant to our task at hand, promoting a design that attempts to show, through color and graphical representation, how art encompasses then entire body including hands, mind, and heart to make something bigger, better and bolder than that which came before.

Being an artist is a commitment to putting your entire being into the public realm to be observed, discussed, criticized and possibly even ridiculed.

Why, then, do artists engage in this practice? Is it an opportunity to massage their egos should they get more than their warhol or is there a need, that extends beyond ego, to exorcise demons, share insight or otherwise make the world a more artful place?

Who are we, a t-shirt company, to try to investigate what has encouraged humans to pursue something that has no bearing on their health, safety and longevity throughout our recorded history (or to be more accurate, the art is the beginning of our recorded history)? All we really want is for you to buy our t-shirts. Or is it?

Love Thy Earth Love Thyself

National-emergency-causing snow storms in Denver, spring plants blooming over the new year, and massive ice-shelf disruptions in Canada all point in one direction. This is more than just some unusual weather, it is an all out global assault on most living creatures, especially humans, on the surface (and in the oceans).

Although the "W" in George Bush's name doesn't stand for "What global warming," it certainly should. Not until Al Gore's dramatic power point film did W and Dick realize that something big was happening on their watch and they couldn't turn a blind eye to it any longer. What will it take for you to realize that you are responsible for bringing about a change as well?

Don't believe me that the world's weather is topsy-turvy and that we are experiencing the beginning of an environmental shift? Just check out Google News for the term unusual weather (look, we did it for you...just click the link). Okay, to be fair, we can't truly claim that this is a genuine "environmental shift." If we didn't usurp some of the world's best brainpower to help us make shirts, our scientificologists could probably have this whole "global warming" thing figured out in no time.

Too bad we've got them "chained" (yes, that has to be in parenthesis...last time we made a comment about the "slave-like conditions and contracts with which we keep our scientificologists loyal to us, the US State Department came by for a "friendly chat" within two days) to our t-shirt making machines, producing quality work like our newest Pro Nature designs, instead of working on all the world's ills.

While current science doesn't have all the answers, there are a lot of indicators about what you can do right now to help the earth. First, recycle every piece of paper and plastic you can get your hands on. Second, turn off any lights and electrical devices you can live without (that also means turning off your computer, and all its peripherals before going to sleep...too lazy to turn off everything? Might we suggest the Smart Strip power strip; it controls the power to all your peripherals based on one master switch attached to your computer. When you turn off your computer, your printer, scanner and speakers turn off as well...without you even having to bend over to flip the power switch!).

Third, and most important, help spread the pro nature spirit with 52tease.com's newest, naturific design. You don't have to embrace the dirty-crunchy-hippy lifestyle to foster a habitable Earth for your children and grand children. It just helps.

Have you ever gone to a bar, restaurant, or party alone and sat in the corner looking scary but really feeling scared? Have you ever found yourself alone in a social situation where people seem to avoid you because you don't have any friends with you to help vouch for the fact that you are a viable social entity (someone who can be approached, talked to, and enjoyed)?

We've intentionally designed these geek-oriented t-shirts to look like a band t-shirt or possibly even the title of Final Fantasy (okay...that was just a mistake, but sometimes serendipity can be the progenitor of the most goodest things ever, right?). This attractive tee shirt will draw the eye of that pretty (boy or) girl across the room. Although we can't guarantee that (s)he will come up to you and ask about the band on your t-shirt, we can guarantee that it will take people more than a first glance to figure out exactly what your tshirt says.

God Loves to Watch us Suffer!

We know, we know...you've been missing your 52tease.com fix. You're so used to us being prompt, courteous and respectful, you feel a little empty space in your hearts when we're late to production time.

What can we say? As you can see, we had no control over the timing of this week's shirt. The big guy/gal/thing upstairs (god) hates us just as much as he/she/it hates each one of you. He/she/it wanted us to be late. In fact, with the number of mishaps, mistakes and issues in the lab this week, we weren't even sure we'd be able to bring you our "god doesn't hate you...he just loves reality TV" t-shirts at all. We were pretty sure "big guns" was going to have us burn down the factory in the process of getting these products to you.

We weren't going to let that happen, though...no matter what.

Why do you think we employ the seventy-two best scientificologists this side of the Mississippi (which side is that, you ask? Well, clues abound, you just have to find them yourself)? Not only are these guys (and gals) the best at their jobs, their self-congratulatory pride in their atheism has helped us best the big man himself...yeah, we know that doesn't make any sense, but we're not the scientificologists, are we?

We did tell you last week that we had something super special for you this week, didn't we? (commercial plug: that's right, we put out a new t-shirt design every single week of the year, hence the name "52tease" [not 52tees, although maybe it should be]. Don't forget that our newest design is always on sale the first week of production. After that, who knows how high the price [and value] can go?) So, what do you think?

We've ramped up the art and pumped out the jams...just for you. These t-shirts are sure to amuse, educate and just provide an all around good time.

Sure, our humorous t-shirts might provoke a fight with some people, but isn't that just par for the course when it comes to religion? Although we doubt that these funny religious t-shirts will cause problems, we are happy to introduce, this week, the solution to that bloody nose.

Even The 1337 Can Appreciate Sports

It's often assumed that geeks and nerds can't appreciate sports the same way a meathead or 'jock' is able to. Truly, many people believe that nerds don't like sports at all. We wanted to test this theory and sent our scientificologists out in search of an answer.

After surveying entire truckloads (yes, truckloads) of people, they were able to discover something that should blow the top off this whole "nerds don't like sports" conspiracy.

Nerds do like sports, it's just that most cretins who appreciate sports can't translate nerds' geekspeak. Of course, nerds have to enjoy the nerdiest sport of all, baseball...but we can't complain-----at least they like a sport (other than a collectible card monster capture game)

To help baseball geeks of the world find each other, we've created our own line of I <3 Baseball t-shirts and gifts. Yes, the < next to the 3 is 1337speak for 'love' so the t-shirts really mean I Love Baseball in ascii geek speak.

What? Has all the nerd-bashing been making you feel bad about yourself? You can't look at yourself in the mirror?

Well, lucky for you we recently discovered that you can get some self satisfaction on Ebay.

Your television lies to you every day. Sure, you could think that I'm talking about Fox news or CNN (whatever side of the 'great divide' you find yourself on, you probably don't believe one network or the other--since their versions of the 'news' rarely seem to jive with each other), but I'm not.

Your television is in a constant battle with your ego. It wants you to believe that you aren't strong enough, smart enough, beautiful enough, thin enough, quick enough, happy enough. When you watch TV, you learn that you don't own the most 'essential' of items to be a good citizen. Your TV wants you to hate yourself.

Why, you ask, would your TV want you to hate yourself? Because once you feel inadequate, worthless and good for nothing, you are a prime target for (you guessed it) ADVERTISING. Oh yeah, the backbone of our modern method of communication and education is nothing other than your own sense of insufficiency. You, my friend, with all your second-guessing and 'star-envy' are the fuel for the modern Vaudeville gristmill.

What can we do to stop this rampant naysayer? What can we do to reclaim our self-worth in the face of this mockery?

Think. Read a book. Play a board game. Go for a walk. Make something (dinner, a craft, a hamster-powered lawn mower, whatever). Unlike the kids at TVturnoff.org, we don't think it is necessary to absent yourself from your TV for a week, but why not try a day? Why not even try those two hours of 'must see TV' you submit yourself to one night?

Whatever you do, please remember that you are smarter, prettier, and better than your TV gives you credit for. You have more stuff and need less that your television would lead you to believe. From whence come Revolutions?

Are you sitting around your house, watching the news on three different news channels just to see how each will 'spin' a news event, waiting for The Revolution?

Guess what...more than likely, the leader of The next Revolution is probably doing the exact same thing (and may even be you).

We admit that our view of history is rather dim, but we can't recall a single Revolution that was started by a television 'clicker'. (In fact, we've had the scientificologists do some research on the matter and they've told me that Wikipedia doesn't have any references to a Revolution instigated by a remote control). This graphic t-shirt design challenges people to question where Revolutions begin.

The spiraled text, coming from the profile's mouth, reads "revolutions" over and over, eventually meeting the bold "start here" over the profile.

Even if you aren't into the political nature of the text, you have to admit that the design just looks cool. Our graphic designers spent over 384 collective hours (we don't have a clock for them to 'punch in' so they just keep track of their own hours, even what they do at home, and send us an e-mail with the total hours at the end of every week. We're positive we get much more productive work if we trust our underlings.) refining and perfecting this design. Because of our commitment to quality, each addition to this Revolution design had to pass a strict bracer of quality control. Not fewer than forty-seven eyes had to vet each stroke before it was added to the shirt.

Sure, there was talk of a supposed "revolution" among the ranks of our own 52tease.com 'slaves' (as we, the "Big Guns" like to call our subordinates) when we forced such stringent quality control on a single design. But we squashed that little rebellion with a little thing we like to call "freedom". We told them we'd fire them if they so much as thought about fighting the Big Guns in any way...that shut them up pretty fast.

At 52tease.com we're always looking for another reason to party. Whether it be in celebration of our first employee with dentures or the third sighting of a rat in the company kitchen, we pull out the party hats, streamers, kiddy pool and Jello and get ready to party like we're at a toga party at our old frat. (think any of us were in a fraternity? check out this design)

In honor of the exceptionally large party we're throwing for ourselves in tribute to the birth of our nation, we had these t-shirts, mugs and gifts printed up with the infamous "baby icon". (come on, we throw parties for ourselves all the time just because we want everyone to treat us like we're special) You too can tell people that you are the baby in the family, a baby in relationships or just an all around infant in shorthand with this simple international symbol.

Why, you ask, would you want to self-identify as a baby? There are plenty of reasons.

1. You get cheaper tickets at the movie theater.
2. Most women can't help but carry you close to their bosom as they show you off around the room.
3. You don't have to walk anywhere you don't want.
4. No one tries to engage you in political or other serious conversations, they just go "goo" and "gah" at you.
5. Think about babies' constant proximity to mammaries!

Now that we think about it, being a baby may not have as many benefits for our female clientele. Generally women who are babies get looked down on as "too emotional" and "undatable". Men babies, though, get extra attention, love and care. How is that fair?

Well, we aren't here to argue gender politics (today at least) but we did, as you will notice hook it up for men-babies (baby blue), women-babies (light pink) and those of us who just don't care to try to fit ourselves into the pre-established color options for boys and girls (black).

Although we had to raise the price on our already-becoming famous Ban GOP Sex logo, that doesn't mean the gay marriage amendment --eerrrm...the Federal Marriage Amendment--is going the way of poodles you can carry in your purse (yes, that trend, even if it is not yet dead, should have been dead before its inception) as the almighty president has weighed in with his opinion on the subject.

According to Guardian Unlimited, "Bush said that it was necessary to keep the debate over gay marriage from spilling over into prejudice. 'As this debate goes forward, we must remember that every American deserves to be treated with tolerance, respect and dignity,' he added."

In his speech on the subject, he's also accused Washington, California, Maryland and New York courts of overturning "laws protecting marriage". What about the laws that protect bigotry, prejudice and hate?

This doublespeak must stop.

He doesn't want to 'keep the debate...from spilling over', Bush wants to put it in a boxing ring (or on the Fox 'News' Network) and watch those gays get the poop beaten out of them.

These items are great for the urban hipster, disillusioned and lost, looking for a way to strike back at the man --for being so darn "man-ish"-- buy dipping into his or her wallet (yes, we understand the irony of the irony of selling a name-brand-less product as a name brand. We are absolutely in competition with the big designers. Rather than make fake designer clothes, we've created a logo that can actually compete with the big boys (and girls, of course).

America's biggest export, currently, is consumer-culture. We don't create products anymore, we create demand for products. You design it to work, we'll refine it to sell (we've touched on this subject before, with our Never Been Market-Tested t-shirts). Otherwise, how could they be the ultimate post-post-modern comment on the branding of the world?

Well, the birthday party was grand. We had a bunch of guests who seemed to enjoy their stay (who wouldn't when you're giving away quality products practically for free?) and none, fortunately, overstayed their welcome.

The parties over now and it's time to go back to the grind. Don't delude yourself, though, and think that we at 52tease plan on resting on our laurels (can anyone explain that phrase? I asked our scientificologists and their answer became so long I almost fell asleep...then just pretended that I had left a shirt under the iron on the ironing board --fools! Not one noticed that I've never worn a neatly pressed shirt in my life) now that we've surpassed the year mark.

Oh yeah, it's been raining out East all right!!!!

And we're eating it up. Nothing an internet company loves more than a bunch of rainy days to help notch up the productivity in the office.

Okay, so it appears that we've been busy putting up pictures out of Maxim magazine or something, but we can assure you that is not the case. No, we just sat down with a nice bottle of alcohol and set to work putting our biggest confessions on t-shirts, mugs, stickers and mouspads for everyone to see (oh yeah, we made men's and women's versions, of course).

As you can tell, the lovely lady on the left lets us know that the bearer is "scared of naked girls" while the more demure young woman on the right points out, rightly so, that a woman is "more than her body".

We could bore you with all the mundane details of our lives this week, as we are sometimes wont to do, but that would be just too predictable.

Instead, we are going to talk about naked women. If naked women offend you in any way, I suggest you absent yourself from this dialogue right now.

Normally, as those of you have been with us can attest, we don't take real kindly to sharing with strangers. 52tease.com has been a true labor of love, nurtured through good times and bad, by our caring...loving hands.

Well, there's that and we truly are just spoiled brats who think we put out the best darn apparel in the underground internet world of apparelling (that must be a word, we've been using it in the office for ages.

To the point. Yes, there's a point. We aren't really sure how we happened upon the amazing lightswitches at Ophelia's Art, but we are sure happy we stopped by.

As you can see, she makes truly beautiful pieces out of something that we would normally consider very mundane.
We're now counting the number of lightswitch covers we have in the office to change them all over (our Feng-shui experts, who we brought in at great personal expense and through a little cultural embarassment, have told us to 'work with the light'; obviously new lighswitch covers are the perfect answer.
